
For a while, I thought I was doing everything right for my skin.
I kept hearing about how amazing retinol was. People said it would smooth texture, clear breakouts, and make your skin look healthier over time. So I did what a lot of people do: I jumped straight into using it.
But instead of helping my skin, it actually destroyed my skin barrier.
My skin became dry, irritated, and sensitive to almost everything. My makeup started separating, my skin felt tight all the time, and nothing seemed to help.
Looking back now, I realized I made several mistakes that completely wrecked my barrier.
Here’s what happened.
I Started Using Retinol Every Day
One of the biggest mistakes I made was starting retinol too aggressively.
Retinol is a very powerful ingredient, and your skin needs time to adjust to it. Instead of easing into it, I started using it every single day.
This completely overwhelmed my skin.
My skin became overly dry and showed acne scars and redness.
For sensitive skin types especially, retinol should be introduced very slowly, usually every 2–3 days at first, and then gradually increased depending on how your skin reacts.
If you’re just starting out, I recommend using a gentle retinol made for sensitive skin so your skin can adapt without becoming irritated.

Please don’t do what I did and continuously switch your skin care products hoping one of them will magically fix your skin. The best thing you can do is stay consistent with a routine that is simple and good for your barrier.
I Was Also Using Exfoliants
Another mistake I didn’t realize at the time was mixing retinol with exfoliants.
Retinol already speeds up skin cell turnover. When you combine that with chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs, it can be way too harsh.
Instead of improving my skin, this combination just made my barrier weaker and more irritated.
When your skin barrier is compromised, even normally gentle products can start to sting or burn.
After using retinol a good exfoliant for sensitive skin is the First Aid Radiance Exfoliating Pads. I recommend using these every 2-3 days a week or less depending on your skins needs. I use them once every week!
I Wasn’t Wearing Sunscreen
This is probably the mistake I regret the most.
Retinol makes your skin much more sensitive to the sun. Without sunscreen, your skin becomes vulnerable to irritation, redness, and damage.
Not wearing sunscreen while using retinol can make dryness and sensitivity much worse.
Now I never skip sunscreen.

Retinol Doesn’t Work for Everyone
Something I didn’t realize until later is that retinol simply doesn’t work for some people.
Even when used correctly, it can still leave certain skin types feeling dry or irritated long-term. If you already have sensitive or dry skin, this can be especially true.
That’s why some people switch to bakuchiol, which is a plant-based alternative that offers similar benefits but tends to be much gentler on the skin.

My Current Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin
After damaging my skin barrier, I completely simplified my routine.
I realized that less really is more when it comes to sensitive skin.
Most days my routine looks like this:
Morning
Gentle cleanser (sometimes I skip cleansing if my skin feels dry) Moisturizer Sunscreen
Night
Gentle cleanser Barrier repair moisturizer Bakuchiol serum

This routine focuses on hydration and repairing the skin barrier instead of constantly trying to treat my skin with active ingredients.
Something That Helped My Skin Heal
One thing that helped my skin recover was actually washing my face less.
Even gentle cleansers can sometimes feel harsh if your skin barrier is damaged. On some mornings I simply rinse my face with water and apply moisturizer and sunscreen.
This small change helped my skin feel much calmer and less stripped.
Final Thoughts

If your skin suddenly becomes dry, irritated, or sensitive, your skin barrier might be damaged.
Retinol can be an amazing ingredient, but only when it’s introduced slowly and used properly.

Start slowly (every 2–3 days) Always wear sunscreen Avoid mixing it with exfoliants Focus on hydration and barrier repair
And if your skin simply doesn’t tolerate retinol well, switching to bakuchiol can be a great alternative.
Your skin barrier is the foundation of healthy skin — once I focused on repairing it, my skin improved so much.
