For the longest time I thought my scalp was just naturally oily. No matter what I did, my hair would look greasy way sooner than I wanted it to. I kept trying richer conditioners and heavier products because I thought my hair needed more moisture or if you’re like me have been told to condition your hair to overtime get better about producing oils which doesn’t necessarily work for everyone.
And the more products I used, the worse my hair actually looked.
Eventually I started realizing that the problem might not be my scalp at all. It might have been what I was putting on my hair.
What I started noticing
My hair is naturally pretty thin, and thin hair behaves differently than thick hair. When you have finer strands, they can’t hold as much product before everything starts looking weighed down.
So when I was using richer products, my hair would look oily much faster. It wasn’t necessarily because my scalp was producing more oil but because my hair was already coated in heavy products.
Once natural oils from my scalp mixed with those products, my hair just looked greasy.
What changed everything for me
The biggest difference I noticed was when I switched to lighter products with simpler formulas.
Instead of layering a lot of conditioners, oils, and treatments, I started focusing on keeping my routine really simple.
Once I did that, my hair started feeling cleaner and lighter, and it didn’t get oily nearly as fast.
It honestly surprised me because I had always assumed that my hair needed more product, not less.
What works better for my hair now
Now I try to keep my routine pretty minimal. I focus on gentle cleansing and lightweight hydration instead of heavy formulas.
I also realized that if I use oils, they work best only on the ends of my hair, not near my scalp. What I go by is putting about a quarter worth of shampoo in my palm, and a pea sized amount of conditioner even if it feels wrong at first. I put it only on the last two inches of my hair, and a small amount of oil that goes exactly where the conditioner was.

For thin hair, I’ve learned that sometimes the healthiest routine is just not overloading your hair with products.
What I’ve learned

If your hair gets oily quickly, it doesn’t always mean your scalp is the problem. Sometimes it just means your hair is being weighed down by products that are too heavy for it.
Once I switched to lighter products and simplified my routine, my hair honestly started behaving so much better.
Sometimes your hair just needs a little less interference.
